Ultraviolet- Shanghai – multi-sensory restaurant

I had to book my trip to Shanghai around this reservation. Ultraviolet is a total multi-sensory experience, all your senses are stimulated to enhance how your food tastes, it was truly a remarkable experience – the table, walls, music, lights, temperature, drinks, interactions and more change with each course. I checked online until I found an open spot and then planed my trip. This was around early 2013 and I had UV course A, now they have UV B and I want to go back to try their other courses.  Chef Paul Pairet actually is in the kitchen and this place only 10 seats and one seating per night.

You actually start your experience at the sister restaurant on the Bund, as the 10 lucky diners wait for everyone to arrive we started with a glass of champaign. After a bus ride through a industrial area you enter a room that looks like an abandoned building and them move into the dinning room, with you name on the table so you know where you sit.  IMG_1434.JPG

First dish that comes out is an apple wasabi ice dish. It was refreshing. I’m sad that this is the only picture I have of it.. not focused…

Then the next dish… IMG_1436.JPG

The room walls begin to change with each dish… this dish had a ‘pop’ theme the sound system would make popping sounds with the wall graphics.

Then the sound of the rain… to complement the next dish…

The theme continues… IMG_1440.JPG

The ocean is the theme you can see, hear, smell and taste the sea.. It was this dish I really started to get into the experience. IMG_1441.JPG

A foggy forest and smoked dome on my next dish… IMG_1442.JPG

The flavors seemed to be amplified… I think they even lowered the temperature of the room just for this dish.  IMG_1443.JPG

Each dish comes with a themed drink of its own. IMG_1444.JPG

By now I am so full… I did need a break. They have a break room so you can get out of your seat and walk around. Also must use the bathroom now… I don’t know if they stop for anyone… IMG_1452.JPG

Next the plate setting is nice… and I can’t wait for the meal to begin again… IMG_1454.JPG

Now we are transferred in to a coral reef. And one of the dishes is a ‘Surprise’… Everyone at dinner was floored. IMG_1457.JPG

The visuals are stunning… and fish swim on my table and plate… /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1458.jpgIMG_1459.JPG

The knife comes out, so you know meat is next. /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1460.jpgThe theme is cosmopolitan Shanghai… IMG_1462.JPGNext is a cruise down the Seine in Paris… and the Wagyu was amazing. IMG_1463.JPG

IMG_1464.JPG

Salvador Dali… I can’t describe what I ate… IMG_1465.JPGBut it was good. IMG_1466.JPGThey melted cheese for the next dish… and it made so much sense… IMG_1468.JPG

The melted cheese when into this dish… it was good.. very good…  IMG_1471.JPG

Imitation shark’s fin soup. They even showed Jaws and played the movie’s famous soundtrack. /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1472.jpg/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1476.jpgIMG_1475.JPGI think this was dessert, and door opens and we are all invited to go into the kitchen. IMG_1484.JPGThe chef makes an appearance. IMG_1479.JPGIMG_1480.JPG

The next dish is fruity… /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1486.jpg/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1488.jpgIMG_1487.JPGThen Nutella makes it to the menu… IMG_1492.JPG

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1491.jpgBack to my childhood with Gummy Bears for the next few… /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/ac2/70730819/files/2014/12/img_1493.jpgIMG_1496.JPG

IMG_1501.JPG

This was the last plate setting. They actually run around the room while you eat… There was no order to how to eat all this… It was light and a good ending to the meal. IMG_1505.JPG

The end of the meal is announced. They invite everyone to stay back to enjoy some champaign in the lounge section, and then you pay for the meal… IMG_1507.JPGAfter the meal, the light come on… I want to go back and try another meal… IMG_1509.JPG
